Join us on\u202f<\/span>Saturday, April 18<\/span><\/b>th<\/span><\/b>, 7:30pm at New York City Center\u202f <\/span><\/b>for our annual <\/span>Divine Nine & HBCU Night<\/span><\/b>\u202f in partnership with the <\/span>National Pan-Hellenic Council of New York City, Inc<\/span><\/b>. and <\/span>The NY Chapter of the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College (NY-NAASC)<\/span><\/b>. <\/span><\/b>This evening provides a unique opportunity for Dance Theatre of Harlem, members of the Divine Nine, along with HBCU alumni, faculty, and students to celebrate our collective history and culture, and to recognize\u202fthe outstanding service and dedication of these organizations and institutions to the communities they serve.<\/span><\/p>\n

Doors open at 6:30pm<\/b>\u202fwith a\u202fDance Party\u00a0<\/b>with\u00a0DJ Monday Blue<\/b>, a Spelman\u00a0Alumna<\/b>\u00a0and member of\u00a0Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc<\/b>.\u202fThe performance begins at 7:30pm\u202f<\/b>and the dance party continues after the show!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All are welcome<\/span><\/b>\u202fregardless of affiliation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The program kicks off with <\/span>Higher Ground<\/span><\/i><\/b>\u2014named one the best performances of 2022 by<\/span>\u202f <\/span>The New York Times<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>Higher Ground<\/span><\/i> explores political parallels between the 1970s and today through the music of Motown icon <\/span>Stevie Wonder<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Next, <\/span>The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude <\/span><\/i><\/b>\u202fwith choreography by <\/span>William Forsythe<\/span><\/b>. Set to the soaring final movement of <\/span>Franz Schubert\u2019s<\/span><\/b> \u201cSymphony No. 9,\u201d this electrifying work pays homage to Petipa and Balanchine with its dazzling partnering and lightning-fast allegro.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The program continues with <\/span>Nyman String Quartet No. 2<\/span><\/i><\/b>, set to <\/span>Michael<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span><\/b>Nyman\u2019s<\/span><\/b> \u201cString Quartet No.2\u201d, choreographed by DTH Artistic Director <\/span>Robert Garland<\/span><\/b>. Complex and witty, this sophisticated work shows off the unique capacity of the company\u2019s artists to code switch with abandon.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Closing out the evening will be the DTH signature classic\u202f <\/span>Firebird<\/span><\/i><\/b>,\u202fwhere a Russian folk tale about the triumph of love over evil is reimagined in a luscious Caribbean setting.\u202f <\/span>John Taras\u2019<\/span><\/b>\u202fchoreography, paired with\u202f <\/span>Stravinsky\u2019s<\/span><\/b>\u202f iconic score, comes to life through the inimitable multihyphenated <\/span>\u202fGeoffrey Holder\u2019s<\/span><\/b>\u202f vibrant sets and costumes.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
